We’re holding two new outdoor climbing courses: one for beginners and one for advanced climbers able to take on 5.9 or greater or who have completed last year’s beginners’ course.
The beginners will gain some top rope training and belaying, the advanced group will learn how to run lead climbing including sport leading and trad leading (time allowing).
If you want in, bring $100 to the climbing club gym in Kam Lake. There’s only 12 spots in total, with six for each class.
Both groups will be meeting at Big Crack, more details are available here:
Help the YKCC kick off the summer climbing season with two June climbing events.
June 8, 6:00 – 9:00: Big Crack
Meet at the trailhead on the Dettah road for a twenty minute walk in.
June 15, 6:00 – 9:00: Ravine
Meet at the trailhead on the highway for a 10 minute walk in.
- All climbers will have to fill out a new waiver at the event for outdoor climbing.
- All climbers must be members in good standing and have paid their $10 annual member ship fee.
- YKCC gear will be made available on a first come-first served basis.
- Only those trained on last year’s outdoor course or who can demonstrate a similar level of proficiency may belay or set ropes. The event’s organizers may remove privileges for these activities to anyone who shows a lack of understanding or who demonstrates unsafe behavior.
The YKCC couldn’t host our annual festival without generous support from our prize sponsors. Air North is once again providing our raffle prize – two round trip tickets to either Whitehorse or Ottawa.
All climbing competition entrants get one automatic raffle entry. Competitors and guests at the festival can purchase additional raffle entries for $10 each. So if you’re stopping by the festival for free climbing lessons and a burger, you can still enter for a chance to win big!
Other prize sponsors for the event include:
- Overlander Sports
- The Black Knight Pub
- The Monkey Tree/Diamante
- Coyote’s Bistro on Franklin
- Barren Ground Coffee
Give these business owners a hug if you know them folks. They’re making their community a better place.
PS. Only one more week until we strip the gym to make room for the new festival routes. If you haven’t finished a route yet, get yourself over to the gym!
It’s that time of year again! Dust off your climbing shoes and get ready for the YKCC’s climbing festival. The festival will be held on May 6th at the YKCC gym and will include our annual competition, free climbing lessons for beginners, a BBQ, and prize giveaways.
We’ll have 30 new routes set by our mystery route setter. That means our current routes won’t be up for long. Climb them while you can!
This is a family-friendly event. Bring the kids, bring your parents – no experience required!
Our competitions are open to all skill levels, even absolute beginners. You can learn about the process here: YKCC Competition Format
Route setting school is open to the public, but preference will be given to YKCC volunteers and members. YKCC volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend.
RSVP to ykclimbingclub at gmail dot com so we can confirm a place for you.
Free climbing this Sunday afternoon. A non-perishable food item gets you a 2-for-1 climbing coupon. Thanks to the NWT Recreation and Parks Association for making this event possible.
Hello YKCC Members!
